Chang Qualifies for NCAA Championships
March 3, 2006
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior Crystal Chang and junior Darwin Johnson each recorded NCAA provisional qualifying marks in separate meets Friday. Chang improved on her own school record in the indoor pentathlon with a score of 3,963 points at the Idaho State Intermountain Championships to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, while Johnson's throw of 62-07.75 earned him first place at the LSU Last Chance meet and a bid to the national indoor championships.
Chang dominated the pentathlon, placing in the Top 4 in all five events. She won the 800-meter run, finished second in both the shot put and the high jump, took third in the long jump and finished fourth in the 60-meter dash. Her school-record score ranks 13th in the country.
Johnson's throw improved on the school and conference record he set at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships and made him a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships. Johnson has shown steady improvement in distance this season, breaking the SFA school record in the weight throw three times.
Senior Kenneth McKinley and sophomore Alecia Green also competed at the LSU meet. McKinley took second in the men's shot put, but his throw of 56-11.50 fell just short of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Green finished eighth in the long jump with a mark of 19-01.25.
The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 10 and 11 in Fayetteville, Ark.
