Marshall Sets School Record in Hammer Throw

March 29, 2008

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team opened competition in the first day of the Rice Bayou Classic Friday night in Houston, Texas. SFA posted some strong performances on the track in the meet's opening day, but the team's biggest highlight came in the hammer throw.

Sophomore Frednisha Marshall has picked up in the outdoor season where she left off in the indoor season - rewriting the SFA history books. She posted a school-record throw of 178-11 to finish second in the women's hammer. Marshall destroyed the previous mark, which she set last season, by more than eight feet.

Freshman Adam Wolfe recorded a mark of 180-2 in his first collegiate attempt in the javelin. His mark was good enough for fifth overall, and it was the third-best mark among collegiate athletes.

Freshman Meredith Blocker posted a fourth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Mineola, Texas, native crossed the finish line with a time of 11:29.02. Senior Kirsten Wieseman also posted a top-10 mark in the steeplechase. She finished seventh overall with a time of 11:57.74.

Classmate Amy Shackelford posted the Ladyjacks' top time in the 5,000 meters. Shackelford finished 10th overall with a time of 18:05.32.

The Lumberjacks were led by Mitch Ownbey who finished third overall in the 5,000 meters. Ownbey posted a time of 14:53.38 in the event.
