Records Fall at Skechers-SFA Alumni Invitational

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Jon Arthur and Laurie Byrd both recorded school records, as the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams recorded six individual titles and three relay wins, Saturday evening in the Skechers-SFA Alumni Invitational at the Fletcher Garner Track.
A senior thrower, Arthur got SFA out to a hot start setting a school record in the second event of the day. The top collegiate finisher in the event, and second overall, Arthur recorded a throw of 200-2 in the hammer throw. Arthur returned to the circle to post another dominating performance in the men's shot put. He won the event with a throw of 58-7.50.
Jamal Peden added another field event title for the 'Jacks when he recorded a mark of 25-6.00 in the long jump. In the women's long jump, SFA had the top two collegiate finishers. Vanessa Evans was the top collegiate finisher with mark of 19-1.25 to place second overall. Evans just beat out teammate Kirsten Knox (third overall) by half an inch.
Laurie Byrd also set a school record, crossing the line with a time 10:48.82 in the steeple chase. The Round Top, Texas, native finished second, while Shelby Pesek took fourth overall with a time of 11:11.19. Adam Saloom took the individual title on the men's side, posting a time of 9:03.28, while Xavier Rodriguez claimed third with his 9:25.38 finish.
On the women's side, the team of Jessica Hatchett, Chasity Clark, Keisha Tryon and Brarsheyia Simpson claimed the women's 400 meter relay with a time 46.07. The men's team of Hampton Hawkins, Cass Brown-Stewart, Torin Crowder and Trevon Caudle, narrowly missed the relay title with a time of 40.91, taking second place.
In the 110 meter hurdles, Nick McCloud took the individual mark, posting a time of 14.35.
Brown-Stewart and Hawkins had the top two times in the 400 meter dash. Brown-Stewart took the individual mark with a time of 46.87, while Hawkins finished second with a time of 47.65.
Josh Taylor dove his way to an individual title in the 400 meter hurdles. The Pearland, Texas, native outstretched Louisiana-Monroe's Martin Solomon at the finish line, winning by two-hundredths of a second.
The team of Tryon, Cierra Jefferson, Hatchett and Simpson, claimed another relay win for SFA, taking the title in the 1,600-meter relay with time of 3:43.66. The 1,600-meter relay dominance continued, as the men's team of Hawkins, Taylor, Crowder and Brown-Stewart claimed the team mark with a time 3:10.71.
In the closing events, Lauren Smith was the top collegiate finisher in the 5,000-meter run. The Lake Jackson, Texas, native claimed third with a time of 17:41.20.
Other athletes just missing individual titles were Simpson in the 400-meter dash, Clark in the 100 and 200-meter dash, Caitlin Jones in the high jump and on the men's side, Jamal Peden in the triple jump.
SFA returns to action Friday, April 19, when they travel to Waco, Texas, when they compete in the Michael Johnson Invitational.
