April 17, 2009
WALNUT, Calif. - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's distance squads finished off the second day of action at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday evening placing two athletes in the top five of the 5,000-meter run. Sophomore Mitch Ownbey just missed an individual title for the men finishing second overall with a time of 14:15.31. Ownbey's time shattered the school record in the event previously held Chance Edwards (2007).
Not to be outdone by the men, sophomore Amy Shackelford also posted a very strong time in the women's 5,000 meters. Shackelford recorded a time of 16:52.29 to finish fourth overall, just missing an NCAA regional qualifying time by 29 hundredths of a second.
Both marks place Ownbey and Shackelford at the top of the Southland Conference in their respective events.
