April 20, 2013
The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams split their athletes between the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas, and the J. Fred Duckett Invitational in Houston. SFA had another strong weekend recording five individual titles.
Sophomore Madison Johnston recorded the first individual victory Saturday. She recorded a throw of 161-00 in the javelin to take the event by two inches, and missing the school record by only two inches. Junior Joshua Taylor recorded SFA's second title, and the first for the Lumberjacks, when he clocked a time of 52.84.
Freshman Bria McIver missed winning SFA's fourth individual title when she was outkicked to the finish line by one one-hundredth of a second in the 100-meter hurdles, but she was the event's top collegiate finisher (14.42).
SFA's disappointment in the women's hurdles was erased in the men's hurdles when senior Nick McCloud won the event with a time of 14.60. Freshman De'Andre Burns also posted a top-five finish in the event when he was fourth with a time of 15.80.
Sophomore Stephanie White missed an individual title in the women's 400-meter hurdles. White recorded a time of 1:03.19 to finish third overall. Classmate Brarsheyia Simpson recorded an identical finish in the women's 200-meter run (24.61/3rd). Simpson returned to the track later in the afternoon to win the women's 100-meter dash (11.87).
Senior Jon Arthur recorded a throw of 60-2.00 inches in the shot put to place third in the event. Sophomore La'Tricia Griffin recorded a top-five finish in the women's shot put with her throw of 48-8.75 to place fifth.
Freshman Shelby Pesek recorded a strong finish in the women's 1,500-meter run in Houston. She recorded a time of 4:38.79 to place third in the event.
There were several events that were not completed at press time. SFA returns to action Friday when they travel to Wichita, Kansas, to compete in the Shocker Classic.
