Arthur Sets School Record, Wins Title

The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team combined for two all-conference honors, one individual title and a school record on the first day of the Southland Conference Championships in Lake Charles, La. The 'Jacks wrapped up the first day in second place, only 12 points off the lead, while the Ladyjacks are tied for fifth only seventh points off the lead.
Senior thrower Jon Arthur gave the `Jacks their first individual title of the meet when he recorded a throw of 204-7 to dominate the hammer throw by nearly eight feet, setting a new school record. Sophomore Adam Amaya added a seventh-place finish in the event (182-1).
Senior Lauren Smith got the SFA women out to a strong start in the meet's very first event. She recorded a time of 36:43.52 to finish second overall earning All-Southland Conference honors in the 10,000 meters.
The 'Jacks scored four points in their first event. Senior Xavier Rodriguez clocked a time of 31:03.81 to finish sixth ahead of teammate Nicholas Guerra who clocked a time of 31:18.55 to finish eighth overall.
The Lumberjacks also have two athletes in contention for all-conference honors in the decathlon. Sophomore Cody Rhodes is currently second overall with a score of 3,588 points, while junior Jamal Davis is third (3,568 points). Sophomore John Park finished the first day just inside the overall top eight with a score of 3,094 points.
The Ladyjacks have two athletes in position to score points heading into the final day of competition in the heptathlon. Junior Shambrail Woods is third overall (2,850 points), while Brianna Dawson is fifth (2,531 points).
The meet continues Saturday with the conclusion of the multi events. Field event finals in the men's and women's long jump, shot put and javelin beginning at 1 p.m. and preliminaries of running events starting at 3 p.m.
