Peden, Plentl Take Titles on Second Day Of SLC Championships

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Jamal Peden won the men's long jump and Randi Plentl took the 3,000-meter steeplechase as the Ladyjack track and field team will take an eight-point lead into the final day of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships after a solid second day.
The men will enter the meet's final day with 41 points, just 1.5 points out of third place in the standings with a 41-point total. The Ladyjacks, meanwhile, hold a narrow five-point lead over UTSA with just eight points separating the top three teams in the standings overall.
Peden was the only Lumberjack to clear 25 feet in the long jump, taking the event with a mark of 25-08.75, with second place more than a full foot behind his jump. Meanwhile, the Ladyjacks got 14 points from the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with Randi Plentl taking the crown with a time of 10:49.34. Laurie Byrd also pushed her way into the scoring column with a fourth-place finish of her own, crossing the line in a time of 11:11.75.
On the women's side, SFA got huge scoring efforts in both the shot put and the high jump, while Kirsten Cox also got a point on the board in the long jump with an eighth-place finish after a leap of 19-01.50. The Ladyjacks got three more points from the shot put with freshmen Tiffany Mott and La'Tricia Griffin finishing seventh and eighth with throws of 45-09.00 and 45-05.75.
The Ladyjacks did not claim the high jump crown, but placed four jumpers - three freshmen - in the scoring, led by freshman Melai Carter who finished third with a jump of 5-08.00. Immediately behind her was another freshman, Caitlin Jones, who clearned 5-06.00 while Carrie Hahn cleared the same mark to finish sixth. Ashley Gadson also cleared the same height, finishing in the seventh spot.
The championships will conclude Sunday with the finals of the running events.
