SFA Track & Field Wins Three Individual Track Titles Friday

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams were led by their sprinters at the opening day of the Houston Multis and Indoor meet Friday evening. The SFA men and women brought home three individual titles including a sweep of the men's and women's 400-meter `B' finals.
Junior Mary Dickerson led a quartet of Ladyjacks in the women's 400-meter dash `B' finals, three of whom placed in the top five. Dickerson clocked a time of 57.42 to win the event. Freshman Paige McCutcheon was just a second back of Dickerson finishing fourth overall (58.41), while Amahra Edwards was fifth (58.65). Junior Lauren Watts was 10th overall with a time of 1:00.16.
Freshman Torin Crowder followed suit in the men's 400-meter dash. Crowder clocked a time of 50.53 to win the event. McCutcheon tacked on the team's third individual title by clocking a time 25.74 in the 200-meters. McCutcheon outkicked classmate Vanessa Whitmire who recorded a time of 25.90 to finish second overall.
The 'Jacks were just as successful in the men's 200-meter dash placing four in the top 10. Freshman Hampton Hawkins was third overall with a time of 22.87. Nacogdoches senior Ty Thomas clocked a time of 22.90 to finish fifth overall. Senior Sherman Rosborough and freshman Edric Williams crossed the line with a time of 23.10 to finished tied for ninth.
Following a junior campaign that forced her to compete only in the javelin, senior Megan Harlan returned to the multis competition Friday. Harlan scored 3,272 points to place third in the pentathlon.
Three field events were not complete at press time. The SFA men and women will return to action Saturday morning for the second and final day of action at the Houston Indoor and Multis competition.
