SFA Track & Field Set for SLC Championships
May 15, 2003 SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team will be in San Marcos Saturday through Monday at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. The championships will be hosted by Southwest Texas. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m., Saturday with the decathlon. The heptathlon is slated to get underway 30 minutes later. A Look Back at 2002 The Ladyjacks scored 93.5 points and finished fourth at the 2002 outdoor conference championships, while the Lumberjacks scored 105 points to finish third. The Ladyjacks return four All-Southland Conference athletes from that team, while the men return five All-SLC honorees and three individual champions, including 2002 SLC Male Track Athlete of the Year Nathan Flores. A Look Back at the Indoor Season The Ladyjacks scored 105 points and finished second, only five points behind team champion Southwest Texas. The Lumberjacks scored 48 points to finish sixth. The Ladyjacks return eight all-conference athletes and three individual champions, including sophomore Ana Rodriguez and senior Destine Rawls. On the men's side, SFA returns seven All-SLC athletes and two individual champions, including junior Nathan Flores and Justin Meier. Ladyjacks in the League Senior Jessica Claiborne is currently third in the triple jump (41-2.25), fourth in the 200 meters (23.98) and fifth in the long jump (19-8.00). Sophomore Shametra Boykins currently stands fifth in the 400 meters with her time of 56.47. Boykins is also currently second in the league in the triple jump with her mark of 41-8.00. The Ladyjacks have a trio of runners that are making their presence felt in the 400-meter hurdles. Sophomore Jocelyn Stevens leads the Southland Conference with her mark of 1:00.26. Stevens sits just ahead of senior Bonnie McHan with a time of 1:01.93. Classmate Katie Lonergan is fifth in the conference with her season-best time of 1:02.94. Stevens is also currently tied for fifth in the high jump (5-5.25). Sophomore Ana Rodriguez paces the field in the 5,000 meters with her time of 17:14.67. Classmate Hollie Counts is currently fifth in the conference with her time of 40:58.87 in the 10,000 meters. The Ladyjacks have also recorded the fourth-fastest time in the 4X400-meter relay (3:47.87). Freshman Kasie Query is currently second in the pole vault (12-6.00) while junior Jennifer Schreiner has cleared a height of 11-6.25 in the pole vault and currently stands fifth. Query is currently tops in the SLC with her throw of 158-04 in the javelin. Classmate Sarah Emerson is fourth with her throw of 149-01. Junior Blake Gordon leads the conference with her throw of 170-02 in the discus and is second in the shot put (48-5.25), just ahead of senior Destine Rawls who has a season-best throw of 48-00.75. Rawls has a throw of 151-08 in the discus, which places her fifth in the conference. Senior Tracy Schupp leads a trio of Ladyjacks towards the top of the SLC standings in the heptathlon. Schupp is second with 4,851 points, while sophomore Lindsey Bryson is third (4,674 points). Freshman Crystal Chang is currently fourth in the league with her season best of 4,588 points. Lumberjacks in the League Junior Mike Thompson is currently atop the league standings in the 1,500-meter run with his time of 3:50.81. Thompson is just ahead of classmate Justin Meier (3:51.13) who is currently third in the event. Thompson also leads the SLC in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:04.17. Classmate Nathan Flores is just behind Thompson with his time of 9:05.79. Freshman Julian Acuna is second in the league in the 5,000 meters with his time of 14:42.35. Flores (14:45.84) is currently third in the event while Meier (14:48.38) is fourth. Flores leads the SLC standings in the 10,000 meters, with his time of 29:46.53. He is just ahead of Acuna who has recorded a season-best time of 31:23.10. Freshman Marc Farris is currently fifth in the league in the 10,000 meters with his time of 32:37.07. Freshman Bo Simpson is currently fourth in the league in the decathlon with 6,302 points. Up Next ... SFA will be in Lincoln, Neb., Friday May 30th through Saturday May 31st at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet. The meet is being host by Nebraska. |
