SFA Track & Field Heads to NCAA Regionals
May 28, 2003 LINCOLN, Neb. - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field team will be in Lincoln, Neb., Friday and Saturday for the first-ever NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. SFA is sending four men competing five events while the Ladyjacks are sending nine athletes competing in 18 events. The meet will begin at 10 a.m. on both days with the javelin and hammer throw. The track events will get underway at 2 p.m., on Friday and 4 p.m., on Saturday. The meet will take place at the Ed Weir Track Stadium. Ladyjacks in Action Senior Jessica Claiborne has qualified for the regional meet in the long jump, triple jump and the 200-meter dash. Classmate Destine Rawls will compete in the discus and shot put alongside teammate Blake Gordon. Sophomore Shametra Boykins qualified for the meet in the long jump, triple jump and as a member of the 4X400-meter relay team. Boykins will join classmates Jocelyn Stevens, Melody Tillman and freshman Stevina Wyatt on the relay team. Stevens will also be competing in the 400-meter hurdles and the high jump. Freshmen Sarah Emerson and Kasie Query will both be competing in the javelin while Query will also compete in the pole vault. Lumberjacks in Action Juniors Nathan Flores and Mike Thompson will be running in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Classmate Alex Beckworth will be competing in the long jump and the 110-meter hurdles. Freshman Kenneth McKinley qualified for the meet in the javelin. Among the Top 10 SFA has a few athletes that currently rank among the region's top 10 in their respective events. Junior Blake Gordon currently ranks seventh in the discus and eighth in the shot put. Sophomore Shametra Boykins is currently 10th in the triple jump. Freshman Kasie Query is ranked fourth in the javelin. Up Next... The NCAA Championship meet will be held Wednesday June 11th, through Saturday June 14th, in Sacramento, Calif. -SFA- |
