Lonergan Named Regional Assistant Coach of the Year
June 3, 2013
Stephen F. Austin sprints and hurdles coach Sean Lonergan has been named South Central Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year announced the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Monday afternoon.
"Coach Lonergan is an outstanding coach," said 2013 SLC Indoor and Outdoor Men's and Women's Coach of the Year Phil Olson. "I am so excited to see him get this kind of national recognition. He and his athletes are so similar - they all work hard - and he coaches very hard. This award couldn't be given to a better person or coach. It's a great day to be a Lumberjack."
In his fifth season with SFA, Lonergan helped guide the Lumberjacks to a sweep of the 2013 Southland Conference Indoor and Outdoor Titles, and his event groups played a vital role in the victories. Lonergan's athletes recorded two relay titles, two conference individual titles and had 19 athletes earn all-conference honors.
Following the outdoor conference championships, Lonergan had three individuals and the 4x400-meter relay team advance to the NCAA West Preliminary meet in Austin, Texas. Junior Cass Brown-Stewart qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 400 meters, and he will join Shawn Goff, Torin Crowder Josh Taylor to compete in the 1,600-meter relay. Freshman Simba Walker-Williams will serve as the alternate on the relay. Both Brown-Stewart and the relay enter the meet ranked among the nation's top 20.
Brown-Stewart will be the first SFA athlete to compete in Eugene. He will step on the track for the semifinals of the men's 400 meters Wednesday at 5:15 (7:15 Nacogdoches time) p.m. The men's 1,600-meter relay semifinal is slated for a 6:40 (8:40 Nacogdoches time) p.m. start Thursday.
