SFA Student-athletes Assist With Be The Match Program
Sept. 17, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Student athletes from both the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team and the track and field team volunteered their time on Monday to help assist with the Be The Match program, which helps patients find a match for those needing bone marrow transplants.
Several students stopped by the middle of campus where they gave a swab of their cheek to prodive cells tissue that will be added to the bone marrow registry.
Every day, thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases hope for a bone marrow donor who can make their transplant possible. Seventy percent of patients do not have a donor in their family. People who become part of the Be The Match Registry become part of every patient's search for a donor.
To be a member of the registry all that is needed is to be between the ages of 18 and 60, be willing to donate to any patient in need and meet certain health guidelines. For more information visit BeTheMatch.org/update or call 1 (800) MARROW-2, (1-800-627-7692).
