Aug 30, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s cross country teams opened up the 2013 season with a triple dual meeting with Sam Houston and Houston Baptist Friday night in the Lumberjack Opener at Pecan Park.
“This was a good opportunity for my runners to get their volume in,” head cross country coach Cody Clark said. “We got a good workout out in before the race and I look for us to get better as the season progresses.”
The men each completed two and a half laps for a total of 5,000-meters, while the women ran a lap and a half two-mile lap.
The Lumberjacks outpaced HBU and SHSU, recording three top five finishes in wins against both universities. Senior Jonus Rodriquez recorded the top mark for SFA, with a time of 16:06.09. The men also saw strong finishes from Nick Guerra (16:20.97) and Cody Brown (16:26.08).
“Jonus and our other upperclassmen really set the tone,” Clark said. “They are high mileage guys, who put their work in every day.”
The Ladyjacks were led in the lane by senior Becca Blubaugh, who recorded a top five finish against both the Huskies and Bearkats. The lone female senior for SFA finished the two-mile run with a time of 11:37.37. Shelby Pesek (12:23.97) Laurie Byrd (12:31.71) and Mary Luster (12:40.86) rounded out the finishers for the Ladyjacks, as Katrina Fite did not finish due to injury.
“I’m looking forward to our next time out, to see what we can do,” he said.
SFA next competes Friday, Sept. 13, in Houston for the Rice Invite.
