SFA Cross Country Opens Season at Home

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's cross country teams began the 2003 season Monday evening in the Lumberjack Opener at the Piney Woods Country Club. The meet was a relay format that consisted of two runners per team. The Lumberjacks recorded a strong finish, taking four of the top five spots. The team of Nathan Flores and Haile Teklai finished second overall with a time of 38:54. The Lumberjacks' next three runners finished in a pack all within one second of each other as the duo of Justin Meier and Cody Clark (39:13.00) edged out Rodney Joseph and Mike Thompson (39:13.29). The team of Chance Edwards and Clifton Tierney finished fifth (39:13.59). The Ladyjacks were just as dominant in their race taking three of the top four places. The team of Vicky Jannise and Hollie Counts finished second overall with a time of 31:10. Emily Hufstedler and Ana Rodriguez were only six seconds back (31:16). Freshmen Julie Kole and LaKoa McKeever had a solid performance in their first collegiate outing, finishing fourth overall with a time of 31:32. The SFA cross country teams will return to action Saturday Sept. 20th, when they compete at the Texas A&M Invitational. The meet will be run at the A&M Golf Course in College Station, Texas. -SFA-
