Oct. 12, 2012
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack and Ladyjack cross country teams will have their final preparatory race before the Southland Conference championships on Saturday when they take part in the 24th annual Chile Pepper Festival hosted by the University of Arkansas.
The men's collegiate 10,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m., followed by the women's 6,000-meter race at 10:30 a.m. Both events will take place through portions of Agri Park and is also the location of this year's NCAA South Central Regional Cross Country meet.
Five schools from the Southland Conference will be in competition in Fayetteville in addition to SFA, including McNeese State, Northwestern State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas.
"This is another great chance for us to measure ourselves against some of the best teams in this region," cross country coach Cody Clark said. "We ran well at the OSU Jamboree and I look for us to build upon that before heading to conference."
Seniors Lauren Smith and Randi Plentl have continued to show well this season, while Clark has been receiving significant contributions from a youthful group of Ladyjacks led by sophomore Laurie Byrd. On the men's side seniors Xavier Rodriguez and Adam Saloom have led the way, as expected, while others such as Hunte Russell, Jonus Rodriguez, Moses Luevano, Nick Guerra and Cameron Courtney all could vie for the next spots across the line.
