Cross Country Ready for Regional Championships
Nov. 14, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Lumberjack cross country teams will head to Waco this weekend to run in the NCAA South Central Regional Championships with a shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championship on the line.
Competition starts at 10 a.m. at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course with the men’s 10K race. The women’s 6K race will follow at 11:15 a.m. Admission to the race is $5 for fans traveling to Waco for the Regional Championships. Fans can follow live results online provided by Delta Timing as well.
SFA Head Cross Country Coach Cody Clark said he is looking forward to a competitive race that could potentially see some Lumberjacks make an impact and advance to the NCAA Championship.
“We are excited to compete and close the season on a strong note,” Clark said. “I believe we have an opportunity for a few of our runners to finish in the top 25 and earn All-Region honors. On the men’s side, Nick Guerra also has a chance to make a push and qualify for his first NCAA Championship if he runs a solid race, which would be huge for him as a redshirt sophomore.”
The top two teams at the Regional Championship will advance to the NCAA Championships with a handful of team at-large bids available across the nation. Individually, the top four runners not on a qualifying team at their respective regional meet will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship as well with two at-large spots available among the nine regional meets.
SFA’s men enter the race ranked No. 7 in the latest USTFCCCA South Central Regional Rankings while the women are ranked No. 12.
Last season, the Lumberjacks saw Xavier Rodriguez qualify individually for the men’s team and Lauren Smith for the women. The men’s team posted a strong finish in fifth place and the women came in 10th overall.
