`Jacks Defeat UALR

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball rallied from a three-run deficit Friday afternoon to defeat Arkansas-Little Rock, 6-5, in Little Rock. The victory puts an end to an eight-game skid and marks the team's first road victory in its return to the diamond.
With one out in the top of the first, junior Steven Hill hit a double to right center. He advanced to third on a single by classmate Chase Sadler. Hill would eventually score on a pass ball to give SFA a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Angel Hernandez got the start for the `Jacks and made the lead hold up for three innings. Hernandez was pulled in the fourth inning, after strong three innings of work. He finished the game surrendering two hits and two runs, while striking out two Trojans.
The Trojans rallied to take the lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning. UALR struck for four runs in the inning to take a three-run advantage into the fifth. But the Lumberjacks didn't back down answering with four in the top of the sixth.
SFA got its first two batters of the inning aboard and after sophomore Buck Britton grounded into a fielder's choice, freshman Zach Gardner scored on a Trojan throwing error. After a Kyle Freeman double put runners at second and third, junior Steven Hill drove them in with a single to left field. The final run of the inning was recorded on a Hunter Bell walk.
The `Jacks posted another run in the seventh inning when junior David Jeans crossed the plate on a UALR wild pitch. The Trojans could muster only one more run the rest of the way as the `Jacks held on for the victory.
Junior Jake Leonhardt recorded the victory for SFA. He went three innings surrendering four hits, but only one run. Freshman Sammy Hardwick picked up his second save of the season.
Hill finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Sadler also recorded a couple hits for the Lumberjacks, finishing the game 2-for-4 at the plate. Bell went 1-for-4 and recorded the `Jacks other RBI.
SFA returns to action Saturday for the second game of the series against UALR. It is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. from Gary Hogan Field.
