SFA Stays Up Late To Pick Up First Win Of The Season
Feb. 24, 2008
EDINBURG, Texas - After a late start time on Saturday and a game that lasted into the early-morning hours of Sunday, the SFA baseball team put away UT-Pan American 9-3 to pick up its first win of 2008 in the second game of the Al Ogletree Classic.
The win marks the fifth consecutive time SFA has knocked off the Broncs, after taking all four match-ups last season.
SFA (1-1) wasted no time giving winning pitcher Lance Luetge a lead, plating six runs in the first four innings. The Broncs (1-1) would only have three runs cross, all in the third inning, as the `Jacks bullpen combination of Kevin Thomas and Jared West combined for 4 2/3 shutout innings of relief, with Thomas notching six strikeouts in his 2 2/3 innings of work.
After cranking a home run in his first game as a `Jack on Friday, senior transfer Matt Whatley put together a 4-for-4 performance on Saturday, including a pair of doubles and a pair of RBI. Kevin Croft left the yard in the third inning off of UTPA starter A.J. Franco, his first home run of the season and 17th in his SFA career, putting him a tie with Jeff Dungen for third all-time at SFA. Overall, Croft would finish the night by going 3-for-5 with a game-high four RBI.
SFA will conclude the Al Ogletree Classic Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game against Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, before returning home to open up the home portion of the slate against Houston Baptist at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday from Jaycees Field.
