Louisiana Tech Evens Series With SFA
March 16, 2013
RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech scored seven unanswered runs and got eight strong innings from Trevor Peterson as the Bulldogs evened the series with Stephen F. Austin, 7-3 on Saturday at J.C. Love Field.
Ricardo Sanchez finished 3-for-4 for SFA (9-9), but no other Lumberjack had more than one hit with the `Jacks picking up just seven base knocks on the day. Meanwhile, Peterson fanned just three hitters in his eight innings, just allowing one unearned run in picking up the win for Tech (2-2).
Kyle Cross fell to 2-2 on the season, allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings before giving way to the SFA bullpen who surrendered three more runs.
After a pair of scoreless frames, SFA struck first in the top of the third when freshman Matthew Dickey smacked an RBI single to score Jackson Hood from second after he was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Cross responded with a perfect bottom half of the frame and the `Jacks rewarded him with another run, courtesy of an RBI single in the top of the fourth from Ricardo Sanchez.
But the Bulldogs knotted things up in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs on a double from Bre'Shon Kimbell and a sacrifice fly from Tyler Burch. Two innings later Louisiana Tech opened it ups, scoring three runs with two outs off of four Lumberjack pitchers in the bottom of the sixth.
Louisiana Tech tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth on a Lumberjack error and a fielder's choice to go up 7-2 before SFA made things interesting in its half of the ninth. A single from Sanchez was followed by a walk to Mackenzie Handel and Brett Thornell getting hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out, prompting the Bulldogs to go to the bullpen for reliever Jamie Gilley.
But SFA was only able to plate a single run on a wild pitch from Gilley as the Bulldog stopper got a fly out from Zach Benson before fanning Freddy Villalobos to leave Dozier in the on-deck circle with the bases juiced.
SFA will close out its series with Louisiana Tech on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with a starting pitcher to be determined.
