Brette Tanner is in his fourth season on the SFA coaching staff and his second as the program's assistant head coach. Before joining the Lumberjacks, Tanner garnered eight years of coaching experience at the collegiate level as both a head coach and an assistant. Tanner serves as the recruiting coordinator for the Lumberjack staff as well as the academic liaison. All three recruiting classes since Tanner's arrival have been nationally recognized. Both the 2007 and 2009 classes were listed as tops in the Southland Conference, according to HoopScoop online. Tanner is also involved in scouting, scheduling, and on-floor coaching. Tanner has been a part of 10 consecutive teams to have reached the post-season, including the two previous Lumberjack teams that posted a 50-14 record. Those two teams won back-to-back Southland Conference titles, earning a berth in the NIT in 2008 and the NCAA Championships in 2009. Since Tanner arrived at SFA, the Lumberjacks have posted wins against teams from the Big 12, Missouri Valley, Conference-USA, West Coast Conference and Sun Belt. Prior to joining the SFA coaching staff, Tanner spent two seasons as an assistant coach at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. He helped guide South Plains to 45 wins in those two years. The Texans were also ranked in the top 25 nationally both seasons. Before coaching at South Plains, Tanner was the head coach at Fort Scott Community College for four seasons. By the time he left, he ranked fourth on the all-time wins list. In addition, three out of the four years as head coach his teams posted the highest team GPA in Region VI. Before being named head coach at Fort Scott, Tanner assisted the program for two seasons. During that time he helped lead Fort Scott to its most wins since the 1975-1976 season. Before beginning his coaching career, Tanner played for Allen County Community College for two years, earning his associate of science degree along the way. Following his stint at ACCC he transferred to Emporia State University. There he earned his bachelors degree and played for the "Dean of Kansas Coaches" Ron Slaymaker. Tanner completed his education at Pittsburg State University where he earned his Masters in Kinesiology. Tanner and his wife, Lindsey, have two children: 7-year-old Colby and Carson, who is four.
