Since Tanner arrived at SFA, the Lumberjacks have posted wins against teams from the Big 12, Missouri Valley, Conference-USA, West Coast Conference and Sun Belt. Prior to joining the SFA coaching staff, Tanner spent two seasons as an assistant coach at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. He helped guide South Plains to 45 wins in those two years. The Texans were also ranked in the top 25 nationally both seasons. Before coaching at South Plains, Tanner was the head coach at Fort Scott Community College for four seasons. By the time he left, he ranked fourth on the all-time wins list. In addition, three out of the four years as head coach his teams posted the highest team GPA in Region VI. Before being named head coach at Fort Scott, Tanner assisted the program for two seasons. During that time he helped lead Fort Scott to its most wins since the 1975-1976 season. Before beginning his coaching career, Tanner played for Allen County Community College for two years, earning his associate of science degree along the way. Following his stint at ACCC he transferred to Emporia State University. There he earned his bachelors degree and played for the "Dean of Kansas Coaches" Ron Slaymaker.
