Jan. 10, 2013
CONWAY, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks put five players in double figures, led by Taylor Smith's 23 points and 12 rebounds and ran its win streak to eight in a row with a 77-69 win over Central Arkansas on Thursday at the Farris Center.
Smith's fourth double-double in his last five games highlighted SFA's (13-1, 4-0 SLC) offensive output and helped the `Jacks go to 4-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2006-07 season. The win sets up a battle of unbeatens on Saturday when SFA travels to Tulsa, Okla., for a difficult road test at Oral Roberts.
SFA got 42 of its points in the paint, but also hit four triples, two of which came from Jacob Parker who just missed a career high with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds. Smith and Parker were joined in double figures by Hal Bateman, who had seven assists to go along with his 13 points and hit seven of eight foul shots.
SFA 55 percent of its shots, but also dominated the glass, pulling down the game's first nine boards and finishing with a 42-28 edge in rebounding, including 14-8 on the offensive glass.
The Lumberjacks led wire-to-wire after opening the game on a 15-5 run, behind early hot shooting from Parker who had 11 of his 15 in the opening period. SFA still led by as much as 10 halfway through the opening period before the Bears went on an 11-2 run of their own to cut the lead to 26-25 with less than five minutes to play.
But SFA answered with a jumper from Bostic before Parker put in five straight points as part of a 9-0 run that pushed the `Jacks into the locker room with a 38-31 lead.
The `Jacks took just eight minutes of the second half to up its lead to its highest of the night, a 13-point advantage after an 8-2 run that included a jumper from Bostic and three quick buckets off the bench from Thomas Walkup.
After taking 10 three-point tries in the opening half, SFA took just two in the second period and reaped the benefits with 62 percent shooting in the second 20 minutes of play. Central Arkansas was never able to get within six points in the final period as the `Jacks had an answer to each Bear bucket, and held UCA to just 12 points in the final eight minutes of play to extend its streak to 46 consecutive games of holding an opponent below 70 points.
The `Jacks will put its unbeaten conference record on the line on Saturday at the Mabee Center in Tulsa when it takes on league newcomer, and favorite, Oral Roberts. The Golden Eagles remained unbeaten in league play on Thursday with an 80-74 win over Northwestern State.
Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on Fox College Sports.
