SFA Rebounds at UCA
Feb. 7, 2007
CONWAY, Ark. - Coming off two straight losses, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team needed to rebound Wednesday night. The Lumberjacks did just that, taking over the glass against the second-best rebounding team in the Southland Conference and taking a 60-54 win at Central Arkansas. SFA outrebounded the Bears - who entered the game with the No. 2 rebounding margin in the SLC - 37-26 to collect its fourth SLC road victory.
The win improved SFA's overall record to 14-8, while the Lumberjacks moved to 7-3 in Southland action, holding steady at third place in the SLC West. The Bears fell to 8-16 on the year and 2-8 in conference play.
Senior center Antuane Miller pulled down eight rebounds to tie his season best and lead the Lumberjacks. He also tied with Josh Alexander for the team lead in the scoring column with 14 points. Miller was 6-for-12 from the floor, leading a resurgent effort from the field by the Lumberjacks. Four days after shooting a season-low 31 percent in their 48-45 loss at Texas-San Antonio, the `Jacks hit 46 percent against UCA.
The Bears set a new season-high for blocked shots by an SFA opponent in the first half with seven rejections, but the Lumberjacks shot the ball well enough to negate UCA's tough defense. SFA quickly shed the memory of last week's shooting woes, hitting 48 percent in the first half against the Bears.
Miller scored eight points in the opening frame to lead the first-half effort for SFA. With UCA throwing up a wall of blocked shots around the hoop three different Lumberjacks - Alexander, Scott Weaver and Keith Hardaway - hit 3-point field goals in the first half, as SFA shot 75 percent from beyond the arc before halftime. Weaver tallied six points and a team-high five rebounds going into the break, as SFA held a 32-26 lead.
The Lumberjacks extended their advantage in the second period and led by as many as 11 points on a couple of occasions. The Bears mustered a late rally and cut the lead to 57-52 with 1:16 left to play. But Alexander drew a charging call to force a UCA turnover then helped salt the game away with two free throws to make it 59-52 on the ensuing SFA possession. The Lumberjacks hit 5-of-8 from the stripe in the last minute to set the final margin.
Weaver finished with six points and seven rebounds. Senior point guard Gerald Fonzie added nine points for the Lumberjacks. UCA was led by Nate Bowie's 16 points.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action next Monday, when they host Northwestern State. The game against the Demons is set to tip at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
