'Jacks Finish Season Sweep of Northwestern State With 66-58 Win
Feb. 21, 2002
The Lumberjacks took a lead with over 18 minutes remaining in the first half and never trailed again as they moved to 11-13, 8-9 with a 66-58 win over Northwestern State before 1,266 fans at the coliseum Thursday night. The win moves SFA into a tie with Northwestern State in the SLC standings as the teams fight for a spot in the SLC postseason tournament. F Ransom White led the team with 10-rebounds and also shared for the team lead in scoring with 12-points. G Skip Jackson also finished the night with 12 points for SFA. Two other Lumberjacks also finished the game in double figures with G Ben Hunt adding 11 points and F Percy Green scoring 10. The 'Jacks bounced back from an awful shooting night against Sam Houston last Saturday in Huntsville to shoot .571 for the game from the field (29-51). The only negative on the night was the fact that the 'Jacks connected on only 6 of 12 free throw attempts. SFA also outrebounded Northwestern State 31-24, scoring 14 second chance points on nine offensive rebounds. The Demons shot .447 from the field (21-47) but were only 1-8 on 3-point shots in the second half of play when they were trying to cut into an SFA lead that hovered around 10-points for most of the half. SFA managed to pull out the win in spite of not scoring a point from the field for the final 6:02 of the game. Green made a layup at that point to make the score 62-50. Northwestern State managed to cut the lead all the way back to five points, 63-58 with 1:10 to go, but could not get any closer as SFA was three for five on free throws in the final minute of play. SFA returns to action Saturday afternoon as part of an SLC doubleheader with UL-Monroe. The first game tips at 4:00 p.m.
