NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Taylor Smith had a double-double and Stephen F. Austin forced 28 Jarvis Christian turnovers in moving to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2003-04 with a 78-39 win over the Bulldogs on Tuesday at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Smith put in 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting with 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, while SFA (3-0) outscored Jarvis (1-4) 42-16 in the paint and limited its second opponent of the year under 40 points.
He was joined in double figures by Ice Asortse with 11 points and three boards off the bench, while every Lumberjack on the roster got into the game with all but two cracking the scoring column. Nikola Gajic continued to produce well off the bench with nine points and seven boards, while Desmond Haymon added eight and Jared Harrison seven.
For the game the `Jacks shot just 46.9 percent from the floor and hit just two of 17 tries from three-point land, while outrebounding the Bulldogs 47-27 with 17 of the rebounds coming on the offensive side and six of which were pulled down by freshman Thomas Walkup.
The `Jacks hit 46 percent of its shots from the floor in the opening period, but did the majority of its damage off of 19 Bulldog turnovers, outscoring them 22-0 in points off turnovers. Buckets from three different Lumberjacks helped open the game on an 8-0 run, starting with a bucket from Smith on the game's opening possession. SFA's lone three-point bucket in the opening half came from Deshaunt Walker nearly nine minutes into the period, stretching SFA's lead to double figures at 19-7 and from there the `Jacks just added to their lead, hitting six of nine foul shots and getting 19 points off its bench.
SFA played nearly an identical second half, statistically, hitting 15 of 32 of its shots and scoring 39 points and taking less than five minutes of the period to balloon its lead to more than 30 points after outscoring JCC 13-5 to open the second 20 minutes before cruising to the finish line.
The `Jacks will try to move to 4-0 on the year on Saturday when it travels to take on Conference USA foe Tulsa at 3:05 p.m.
