SFA Drops Jarvis Christian
Dec. 18, 2010
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin overcame a slow start against Jarvis Christian to roll to a 76-45 win Saturday night in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The game marked the third consecutive contest - and the fourth time in five games - for the `Jacks to hold their opponent to fewer than 50 points.
Senior forward Jordan Glynn scored 15 points to lead all players and pace an inside game that saw SFA (7-2) outscore the Bulldogs (5-7), 44-14, in the paint. The `Jacks were a season-worst 1-for-13 from 3-point range.
SFA was just 5-for-14 from the field through the game's first 11 minutes and found itself trailing 16-12 after a 3-pointer at the 10:35 mark by Jarvis Christian's Gerneal White. But Glynn tipped home a missed jumper to make it a two-point game, and Amos Olatayo drove the lane for a layup to tie it with 8:27 to play.
The Bulldogs would regain the lead briefly one more time, but SFA went 6-for-8 from the floor to finish the half on a 15-0 run and take a 12-point lead (36-24) to the locker room. Junior center Jereal Scott and senior forward Mark Gomillia scored four points each down the stretch.
Starting with Glynn's tip-in at the nine-minute mark, SFA shot 48 percent from the floor to finish above 45 percent for the game.
Glynn was the only Lumberjack to reach double figures in scoring, but the SFA bench outscored the Jarvis Christian reserves, 35-20, led by nine points from junior Dion Prewster and eight from Olatayo. Senior guards Eddie Williams and Denzel Barnes had eight points apiece, and Barnes added six assists, giving him three straight games with at least five dimes.
White scored 11 points - nine on 3-pointers - to lead Jarvis Christian. The Bulldogs are the third consecutive SFA opponent to be held to one double-figure scorer. Saturday's game marks just the second time in Danny Kaspar's tenure for SFA to hold three straight opponents under 50 points. The `Jacks last accomplished the feat in 2008-09, against Southeastern Louisiana, Northwestern State and McNeese State.
SFA will return to action Monday, when the Lumberjacks travel to El Paso, Texas, to take on UTEP. The game against the Miners is scheduled for a 9:30 p.m. tip.
