SFA Looks to Keep Momentum

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will try and build on the momentum of its first Southland Conference win when it heads to San Marcos for Thursday's game against Texas State. SFA (8-6, 1-3) defeated McNeese State, 64-57, on Saturday to put the brakes on a four-game slide. The game against the Bobcats is set to start at 7 p.m.
LAST GAME: SFA rallied from what was once a 20-point deficit to defeat McNeese State, 64-57, ending a four-game losing streak. The game featured the return of senior point guard Marcus Clark, following a one-game injury absence, and a season-best 22-point performance from classmate Anthony Paez. Paez scored 14 of his 22 points in the second half, when the Lumberjacks outscored McNeese State, 47-30.
VS. TEXAS STATE: The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series against Texas State, 88-66. SFA is 6-2 against the Bobcats under head coach Danny Kaspar, and the Lumberjacks have won six of the last 10 meetings between the schools. SFA has won three in a row against Texas State, including a 76-59 home win in their only game last season.
THE BOBCATS: Texas State is 2-11 on the year and 0-2 in Southland Conference play. The Bobcats are coming off a 79-62 non-conference loss to Texas-Pan American on Monday. Texas State defeated UTPA in an earlier meeting this season. The Bobcats' only other win was an 84-71 verdict over UT-Tyler. Texas State brings a three-game losing streak to its game with the Lumberjacks.
THE COACHES: Danny Kaspar is in his sixth season as head coach of the Lumberjacks. Including a nine-year stint as head coach at Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Kaspar is 303-121 (.715) over his 14-year coaching career. Kaspar has guided the Lumberjacks to an 84-69 (.549) mark during his tenure. Dennis Nutt is in his sixth season with the Bobcats, his first collegiate head coaching job. His teams are 71-83 (.461) overall.
UP NEXT: The Lumberjacks will return home for a game against Texas-San Antonio on Saturday. The contest is set to tip off at 4 p.m. in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
