Lumberjacks Take on Mavericks
Feb. 24, 2007 NACOGDOCHES, Texas - And Then There Were Three: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will play the first of its three remaining regular-season games Saturday, when it takes on Texas-Arlington on the road. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start from Texas Hall in Arlington, Texas. The Lumberjacks (15-10, 8-5) enter the game as the No. 3 team in the Southland Conference West Division. Texas-Arlington is in fourth place with an 11-16 overall mark and a 6-8 SLC record. Last Game: SFA broke out of a two-game losing streak in dramatic fashion with a 78-75 overtime win against Texas State Thursday. After trailing early, the Lumberjacks took the lead late in the first half and held it for the entire second period. But SFA couldn't put the Bobcats away, and a late Texas State rally tied the game at 72. SFA backup point guard Corwin Ragland scored four points in the extra period to boost his team to its second overtime victory of the season. Senior guard Keith Hardaway came off the bench for a career-high 17 points to lead SFA. Sophomore center Matt Kingsley scored 16 points, and sophomore forward Josh Alexander added 10 points and a team-best nine rebounds. vs. Texas-Arlington: SFA holds a 26-24 edge in the all-time series against the Mavericks. Over the last 11 meetings, SFA has won six games. Texas-Arlington holds a 7-6 advantage in the 13 games since Danny Kaspar took over as head coach at SFA. The Lumberjacks defeated UTA, 65-54, in their first meeting this season. The Mavericks: After struggling early, Texas-Arlington has played well of late. The Mavericks are currently on a two-game slide, but the losses came against SLC West-leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State. Prior to that two-game slump, the Mavericks had won five straight. The Coaches: Danny Kaspar is in his seventh season as the head basketball coach at SFA. Kaspar is 108-86 (.557) in his time with the Lumberjacks. He is 327-138 (.703) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach. The Mavericks are coached by Scott Cross. He is 11-16 (.407) in his head coaching debut. Up Next: The Lumberjacks will hit the road again for a game against SLC West-leading Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The game against the Islanders is slated for a 4 p.m. start on Wednesday, Feb. 28. SFA will follow that up with its regular-season finale at home against Texas-San Antonio on March 3.
