'Jacks To Host UL-Monroe Wednesday Night
March 5, 2003
The Lumberjacks enter the final week of the regular season having locked up second place in the SLC standings and a first round bye in the Southland Conference postseason tournament. SFA can still capture a piece of the SLC title with wins in its final two games, coupled with a loss by conference leading Sam Houston.
First up for SFA are the Indians of UL-Monroe Wednesday night in the coliseum. SFA is 11-1 at home this year, with the lone loss coming to Centenary back on Dec. 3. SFA has run off 10 straight at home following the loss. SFA can post a 20-win season for the first time since the 1986-87 season with wins in its final two regular season games.
The 'Jacks fell to 6-6 on the road this past Saturday as they fell to Southwest Texas, 60-58, on a 3-pointer with seconds to play. Trailing 58-57 with less than 10 seconds to go, Terry Conerway hit a three that buried what had been a big comeback for the 'Jacks. SFA trailed 42-27, with just over 16:00 to play before mounting a comeback that would see them take their first lead of the night with 2:28 left in the game following free throws by Jasen Gast.
SFA had a chance to add to its one point lead with under a minute to play but failed to get off a shot before turning the ball over to the Bobcats, allowing them the chance at the winning shot.
F Jasen Gast rebounded from being shut out against UT-San Antonio to score a game high 16 points in the loss to Southwest Texas. Gast was 6-6 at the free throw line and continues to lead the SLC in free throw shooting at .877 (57-65) for the year.
C Percy Green also continues to lead the conference in field goal percentage at .568 (137-241) for the year. Green was only 4-12 from the field against Southwest Texas, one of his worst nights of the year percentage wise.
UL-Monroe leads the overall series 27-12. SFA is 9-24 against the Indians since joining the SLC. SFA has won two straight and three of the last five between the two teams. SFA handed UL-Monroe an 82-72 loss to open SLC play back on Dec. 28. (See box on page 12 of this release.)
