March 11, 2003
SFA put the wraps on its most successful season ever as a member of the Southland Conference last Friday night with a 75-63 win over Northwestern State. The win in the regular season finale marked win number 20 of the year, the first time SFA has won 20 games in a season since the 1986-87 season and also was the 16th conference win of the year, the most ever by the 'Jacks.
In going 16-4 in Southland Conference action, SFA finished second in the conference standings thereby earning a first round bye in the Southland Conference Tournament presented by Audiovox. The bye places SFA in the tournament semifinals, the third time SFA has played in the semifinal round. The 'Jacks have never played in a conference tournament final.
Friday's win over the Demons moved SFA to 14-1 at home for the year. The 'Jacks have won 13 straight in the coliseum since a Dec. 3 loss to Centenary (69-75). SFA closed out the regular season having won six of its last eight games and three of its last four. G B.J. Banks provided the spark to ignite the SFA offense in Friday's win over Northwestern State. Banks led all scorers with a game high 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half. F Stevin Ozier and F Jasen Gast added 13 each for SFA. Gast had nine points in the first half.
C Taylor Moore led all rebounders with a career high 12 rebounds. He also added six points and has averaged 8.0 rebounds and 6.0 points per game over his last four games.
C Percy Green was held to just seven points in 18 minutes of action, and has been held to less than 10 points in four of his last five games. He has been battling a tender ankle, but with rest is expected to be at full strength Wednesday night. Green became only the second Lumberjack ever to earn First Team All-SLC honors earlier this week in a vote of conference coaches and media representatives.
