Lewis Signs with SFA
May 5, 2006 NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head basketball coach Danny Kaspar announced Friday the addition of Shelby Lewis to the Lumberjack squad. Lewis, a junior college transfer, is the third SFA signee this spring and the fourth addition to the team for the 2005-06 year. Lewis spent last season playing for coach Greg Young at Jacksonville College in nearby Jacksonville. The 5-11, 170-pound point guard from Conroe will have three years of eligibility remaining at SFA. "We are extremely excited to have Shelby join our program for the next three years," Kaspar said. "He is a point guard who can get the ball to the basket and is a very intelligent player. We look for him to do good things immediately in a 'Jacks uniform." Last season, Lewis averaged 7.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists for Jacksonville. A solid shooter, he connected on 45 percent from the field and 39 percent from the 3-point line. Lewis was also a 77 percent free throw shooter. "Shelby was the glue for our basketball team this season," Young said. "He continued to get better as the season progressed and did a great job running our team on both ends of the floor. Shelby ended the year as one of our most consistent players, in terms of not turning the ball over and doing what it takes to win basketball games. "We are very excited for Shelby and his family to have this opportunity to be a part of a successful Division I program. It could not happen to a better person." Lewis will join a Lumberjack team coming off a solid season that ended on a high note. SFA went 17-12 overall and won seven of its last 10 games of the regular season to finish fourth in the Southland Conference with a 9-7 league mark. The Lumberjacks reached the semifinal round of the SLC Tournament. - SFA - |
