'Jacks Announce 2010-11 Schedule
Sept. 16, 2010
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball coach Danny Kaspar announced Thursday his team's schedule for the 2010-11 season. The slate includes 16 home games and a pair of Division I opponents that have never played in Nacogdoches before.
Despite being one game shy of a full slate with 28 contests scheduled, SFA's 16 home games are the most in a regular season during the program's NCAA Division I era.
"I'm pleased with our schedule in that we have a good number of home games this year versus what we've been able to get in the past," Kaspar said. "It'll be an exciting year, and I hope our fans will come out and support us in great numbers."
SFA opens the season in mid-November with a pair of consecutive home contests. The 'Jacks play Howard Payne Nov. 12 in the debut, then host Longwood on Nov. 15. The Longwood game is a return date from SFA's road win last year and will mark the Lancers' first visit to Johnson Coliseum.
The Lumberjacks then head to Lubbock for a game at Texas Tech on Nov. 19 and take on Louisiana-Monroe on the road Nov. 23 before returning home to play Oklahoma Arts and Science on Nov. 27. The game against the Red Raiders marks the fourth straight season for the two teams to clash. Last year's meeting in Nacogdoches ended in a two-point win for Texas Tech.
SFA opens the month of December with a road game at Texas A&M Dec. 2. The 'Jacks then host the Etech Lumberjack Classic on Dec. 10 and 11. This year's event features Grambling State, Chicago State and Central Arkansas. SFA will meet Grambling on Dec. 10 and face Chicago State on Dec. 11 with Central Arkansas playing the two teams in reverse order. The game against Chicago State will mark the first meeting with the Cougars for SFA.
"Again, a lot of credit goes to Matt Rocco and the people at Etech for sponsoring the Etech Lumberjack Classic," Kaspar said. "We'll have a great 'Classic. A lot of people may not realize it, but this is a very difficult thing to put on at this level. Without the help of Etech and the work of my staff, [athletic director] Robert Hill and the athletic administration, this would be nearly impossible."
The Lumberjacks host Jarvis Christian Dec. 18 then hit the road for a Dec. 20 game against UTEP before taking a few days off for the Christmas break. The game against the Miners will mark just the second meeting between the two teams and the first since 1986. SFA wraps up non-conference play by hosting Louisiana-Monroe Dec. 29, followed by a home game against Wiley College on Jan. 3.
The Lumberjacks begin the first season of their permanent move back into the Southland Conference West Division on Jan. 8. SFA opens the league slate with a road game against East Division foe Southeastern Louisiana.
Highlights of the home conference schedule include UT Arlington on Jan. 22, a televised game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 29, UTSA on Feb. 12, Texas State as part of a home doubleheader with the Ladyjacks on Feb. 19, and a game against Lamar on Feb. 23.
After a two-year stint in the Southland East Division with only one game per year against rival Sam Houston State, SFA will be back to a two-game series with the Bearkats in 2010-11. The first contest is scheduled for Jan. 26 in Huntsville, Texas. SFA will host the Bearkats on March 2.
The season finale is slated for March 5 at Northwestern State with the Southland Conference Tournament set for the week of March 8-12 in Katy, Texas.
