Lumberjacks Set to Face UTPA
Dec. 17, 2006
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Back on Track: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team recovered from its first home loss of the year by taking care of Louisiana-Lafayette, 80-42, last Saturday night. The Lumberjacks (5-4) will be looking for their second road win of the year on Monday, Dec. 18, when they travel to Edinburg, Texas, to take on Texas-Pan American (5-5). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start from UTPA Fieldhouse.
Last Game: SFA was dominant in every sense of the word in dismantling Louisiana-Lafayette. The Lumberjacks were all over the Ragin' Cajuns at the defensive end of the floor, holding ULL to a season-low 42 points and the Cajuns' worst shooting percentage of the year (.319). On offense, SFA shot a season-best .652 from the floor, led by sophomore center Matt Kingsley. Kingsley scored a game-best 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Senior center Antuane Miller scored 13 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. SFA forced the Cajuns into 20 turnovers, which the Lumberjacks converted to 24 points. The SFA bench outscored ULL's reserves, 34-9, the fifth time this season the Lumberjack backups have outscored their opposition by more than 10 points.
vs. Texas-Pan American: The Lumberjacks hold a 2-1 all-time record against UTPA. SFA dropped the first meeting in 1986, falling to the Boncs, 81-78. But the Lumberjacks have taken the last two games in the series, including a 71-52 win last season.
The Broncs: Texas-Pan American (5-5) is in the throes of a four-game slide. However, all five of the Broncs' losses have come away from UTPA Fieldhouse. The Broncs are undefeated at home and have outscored the opposition by an average of 14.5 points per game in home contests.
The Coaches: Danny Kaspar is in his seventh season as the head basketball coach at SFA. Kaspar is 98-80 (.551) in his time with the Lumberjacks. He is 317-132 (.706) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach. The Broncs are under the direction of first-year head coach Tom Schuberth. Schuberth is 5-5 (.500) so far. He came to UTPA following a four-year stint as associate head coach at Central Florida.
Up Next: SFA will resume action with a Dec. 22 home game against Northern Illinois. The game against the Huskies is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Following the contest, SFA will take a few days off for the Christmas holiday before returning to the court on Dec. 30 for a home game against Howard Payne.
