Smith Named SLC Player Of The Week
Dec. 24, 2012
FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin forward Taylor Smith has been named the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
Smith was an integral part in SFA picking up a pair of wins on the week, including its signature non-conference win of the season last Tuesday at Oklahoma.
The senior from Schertz, Texas, averaged 17.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games, hitting 56 percent from the field. He rejected three shots and had three steals in each contest. Smith had 14 points and seven rebounds and four blocks in SFA's 56-55 upset of Big 12 foe Oklahoma in Norman as the Lumberjacks snapped the Sooners 36-game home win streak against non-conference opponents.
Two days later Smith, a preseason all-Southland Conference first team choice, followed it up with his second double-double of the season, hitting 7 of 10 from the floor, and a career-best 6 of 7 foul shots, to go along with a 12 rebounds - eight on the offensive glass - and three blocks as SFA rolled to a 22-point (60-38) win vs. Grambling that pushed its record to a league-best 9-1.
It is the first such honor for Smith in his career and the second this season for the Lumberjacks, joining Antonio Bostic in that group after he captured a weekly honor earlier this year after SFA's win at FIU.
Smith and the `Jacks will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 29, when they head south to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the conference opener for both teams.
