Ward Named to CFPA Preseason Watch List
May 19, 2013
Junior wide receiver D.J. Ward has been named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Wide Receiver Award Watch List announced CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith Sunday afternoon. Ward joins senior quarterback Brady Attaway and junior running back Gus Johnson who were named to the CFPA's watch list at their respective positions earlier this month.
"Congratulations to D.J. Ward on earning a spot on the 2013 CFPA Watch List," said Smith. "Coach (J.C.) Harper has recruited and developed a number of excellent receivers at Stephen F. Austin. Ward is likely to continue that tradition in 2013."
SFA is one of only six programs in the nation to have a quarterback, running back and receiver named to the 2013 CFPA Watch Lists. The Lumberjacks have recently had two players earn CFPA honors in Jeremy Moses (2010 CFPA Elite Quarterback Award) and Willie Jefferson (2012 CFPA Elite Defensive Performer Award).
Ward worked his way into the starting lineup midway through the 2012 season, and became a go-to player for the Lumberjacks. Ward finished second in the conference with 62 catches for 762 yards. He also caught four touchdown passes. A 2012 second-team All-Southland Conference selection, Ward closed out the season with three 100-yard receiving games.
"Every time the ball goes in the air D.J. believes it's his responsibility to go and get it," said Harper. "What separates him from receivers is his desire to be the very best. D.J. is a very competitive young man."
