'Jacks Finish Second Day of Spring Workouts

March 20, 2001

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team completed their second day of spring practice under ideal conditions Tuesday afternoon at Homer Bryce Stadium. Tuesday's practice concluded the non-contact period for spring workouts. Coach Mike Santiago said afterwards that he is pleased with the workouts to this point.

"I think that the first two practices have been really good workouts. Everyone seems to be focused about what needs to be done this spring, in order for this team to be better next fall," said Santiago.

SFA enters spring workouts looking to fill a few holes offensively, as well as, install a new defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Kim Dameron.

"So far it appears that the players are very excited about the new scheme and the opportunities it gives players to be playmakers. We've got a lot to learn, but we've got fifteen workouts this spring to work on things and get better. Offensively, we will be evaluating the guys we have on campus in regards to finding a replacement for Derrick Blaylock at tailback. Wes Pate will also get the opportunity to get a few more reps in with some of the younger receivers. As a staff, we will also be evaluating the quarterbacks on the roster to determine the back-up quarterback heading into the fall. Overall, we just want to become a more efficient offensive unit."

Santiago also said that the defensive staff will be using the swpring practice sessions to evaluate each position defensively in an effort to identify the eleven best players and get them on the field. Finding a replacement for the graduated Ryan White at holder is also an area of emphasis this spring.

Thursday marks the first day in pads for the Lumberjacks, with the first scrimmage set to take place Friday, March 30 at 7:00 p.m.
