March 30, 2001
Fourteen student-athletes at Stephen F. Austin State University have earned a spot on the 2000-2001 Southland Conference All-Academic Teams, according to a list released today from the Southland Conference office. The fourteen athletes represent three different teams on the SFA campus, and all carried cumulative grade point averages above 3.0 following the fall semester. The team represents All-Academic selections for fall sports.
Four members of the Lumberjack football team were named to the team, including former quarterbacks Peyton Jones and Travis Fallon. Jones was an honors graduate in December with a degree in finance, while Fallon earned honors with a degree in education.
The Ladyjack soccer team also placed four team members on the squad. Heidi Moore, an animal science major from Midland, and Lotta Westerberg, a political science major from Sodertaje, Sweden earned top honors for the team, both with GPAs in excess of 3.5 for the last year. Season Settle of Jacksonville and Kim Elger of Midland also were named to the team.
Six members of the Ladyjack volleyball team were also named to the SLC team. Arlington senior Jennifer Orndorff, Houston junior Marissa Dorcheus, Cy Creek junior Kristy Rhodes, Albuquerque, New Mexico junior Jocelyn Shaw, and Houston sophomores Sunni Williams and Angie Wood all posted GPAs above 3.0 and earned a spot on the team.
"I'm extremely pleased that these student-athletes have earned this distinction. In recognizing them for their efforts and abilities in the classroom, we are able to see that the student-athletes at Stephen F. Austin are truly that, student-athletes," said athletic director Steve McCarty.
