'Jacks Wrap Up Week Two With Scrimmage
March 30, 2001
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team wrapped up its second week of spring practice with the first scrimmage of the spring Friday afternoon, at Homer Bryce Stadium. Coach Mike Santiago called the 70-play scrimmage "enthusiastic and exciting".
"I thought that, overall, the scrimmage was very good. There was some good hitting on both sides of the ball. I thought everyone played with a good deal of enthusiasm and excitement today, and a great deal of effort. We still have things to work on in regards to execution, but I thought that the effort and enthusiasm it takes to play the game was there," said Santiago.
The Lumberjack defensive unit did a good job of stopping the run in the workout, although they gave up several long pass completions on the afternoon. Arp senior Wes Pate connected with Marshall sophomore Lawrence Hamilton for a 45-yard touchdown strike early in the scrimmage for the only touchdown of the day.
Santiago said that the defensive unit has roughly one-third of its total package in place, but players are grasping the concept and continue to improve with each workout.
SFA returns to the practice field Monday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. workout and will scrimmage again next Friday, under the lights, with a scheduled 7:00 p.m. scrimmage in Homer Bryce Stadium.
