White Wins Spring Game, 12-9
April 11, 2001 In a scrimmage game dominated by defense, the White team prevailed Wednesday night 12-9 over the Purple squad on the strength of a 26-yard touchdown run by fullback Felton Johnson with just over four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Purple squad had taken a 9-5 lead with 2:58 remaining in the third quarter when Wes Pate connected with Lawrence Hamilton for an 89-yard touchdown to give the purple team the lead. The White defense, consisting of the `Jacks number one defensive unit, throttled the Purple ground game, limiting them to only 41 yards on 28 carries. Pate was six of 15 for 129 yards and a touchdown through the air. He also threw one interception. The Purple team was held to only 170 yards of total offense on the evening and forced into two turnovers. Fullback Felton Johnson was the star offensively for the White team, piling up 93 yards on four carries and scoring what proved to be the game winner from 26-yards out with 4:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. The White defense dominated, and scored on a safety with 4:12 to go in the third quarter when they dropped Taylor Bunch for a two yard loss in the end zone. The game wrapped up a successful spring practice for the `Jacks, who will open fall camp the second week of August, in preparation for the September 1 season opener with Portland State.
