NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Student Athlete Advisory Committee, in conjunction with Azleway Children's Services, had approximately 60 local children on campus Friday to decorate a pair of TOMS shoes that had donated to them. The shoes had been purchased and donated by the SFA athletes.
"Our athletes take pride in giving back to the community," said SFA Senior Woman Administrator Loree McCary. "Every event that our teams take part in is very special to them, but when children are involved in takes on even more meaning."
Athletes representing every varsity sport participated in the program, which donates shoes to those in need. Through TOMS, the donation is larger than the 60 purchased and donated by SFA. For every pair of TOMS purchased, TOMS will donate a pair of shoes to needy children around the world. Through the commitment by SFA athletes, more than 150 pairs of TOMS have been donated to less fortunate children around the world.
TOMS works to establish shoe-giving partnerships with humanitarian organizations around the world. With their partnership with Giving Partner, they identify communities that are in need of shoes and would best benefit from TOMS. Children who receive the shoes are part of a larger health and education program that helps children obtain the care they need to stay healthy and in school.
Azleway Nacogdoches has a similar focus locally. Their mission is to provide home, school, and treatment opportunities with intervention and prevention strategies to children and their families from a faith-based perspective in order to increase their abilities to succeed in life.
