June 12, 2013
The memorial service for former Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack quarterback John "Johnny" Linney has been scheduled for Saturday, June 22 at 1 p.m. from the John Wesley United Methodist Church in Houston. Linney passed away Saturday June 8th.
Linney was a three-year letterwinner on the Lumberjack football team. A former quarterback, Linney played for SFA from 1952-54. The third-ever recipient of the Ralph Todd Male Athlete of the Year Award, Linney was inducted into SFA Letterman's Association Hall of Fame in 1983.
Linney helped orchestrate the largest single-season turnaround in program history at the time, when he guided the Lumberjacks to a 6-3-0 overall record in 1954. It was a five-game improvement from the previous season.
Linney served as an SFA co-captain, along with teammate James Simmons. Following graduation, Linney moved to Beaumont, Texas, to become the assistant baseball coach at Beaumont High School under Simmons.
Linney eventually took a job in the corporate world where he went to work for Exxon. Following his retirement from Exxon, Linney got back into coaching within the Klein ISD.
Linney was a key figure in helping raise funds for SFA Athletic Scholarships. The first-ever recipient of the John and Beverly Linney Athletic Scholarship was current SFA head track and field coach Phil Olson.
