Football Reports for Preseason Camp
Aug. 2, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - With the 2012 season opener just 28 days away, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team reported to campus for the beginning of preseason practice. Approximately 90 players began checking into the dorms at 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The team will close the day with their first official team meeting.
Among the returning players, SFA has a wealth of talent coming back on the offensive side of the ball. The Lumberjacks return 10 starters from the 2011 season, including quarterback Brady Attaway and All-American receivers Gralyn Crawford and Cordell Roberson. In addition to the skill positions, The Lumberjacks also return four of five starters on the offensive line, which led the nation in pass protection a year ago.
The defense took a more significant hit due to attrition, but the starters returning are all coming off big seasons. Senior defensive end Willie Jefferson is a preseason All-America selection, while linebacker Ryan Epperson garnered second-team all-conference honors during his first year as the starter. Junior Malcolm Mattox is coming off his best season in a Lumberjack uniform that saw him finish among the league leaders in sacks.
The Lumberjack secondary returns the Aubrey twins, both of whom have earned all-conference honors, including Jordan who posted a career year last season. In addition to the Aubreys, junior Caleb Nelson received honorable mention All-SLC recognition last year.
A preseason top-25 team in some polls, the Lumberjacks go in search of their fourth straight winning season in 2012. SFA stumbled out of the gate last season going 1-5, but closed the season winning five straight. The Lumberjacks will take to the field for their first workout Friday at 6:30 p.m.
