SFA Football Reports Back to Campus
Aug. 4, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Approximately 90 Stephen F. Austin football players reported to campus Sunday afternoon for the start of preseason camp. SFA opens the 2013 season in 27 days at Weber State.
The Lumberjacks open camp with 49 returning letterwinners, including 16 starters from last year's team that finished tied for fourth in the Southland Conference with a 4-3 overall record. Among the returning starters are preseason all-conference selections Gus Johnson, D.J. Ward, Darren Robinson, Michael Brooks, Andrew Ratliff and Caleb Nelson.
In addition to the six athletes on the preseason all-conference team, SFA also returns senior quarterback Brady Attaway. The Whitehouse, Texas native, enters his final season on pace to leave SFA as the school's second all-time leading passer behind only 2010 Walter Payton Award winner Jeremy Moses.
The defense also returns some of the league's top talent as well. One of the nation's top defensive ends, and a 2013 CFPA Preseason Award Watch list selection, Robinson will be joined at defensive end by senior Malcolm Mattox. A 2011 All-SLC selection, Mattox makes the move back to defensive end after spending his junior season at tackle.
The veteran leader of the secondary, Nelson is a three-time honorable mention All-Southland selection who has 28 starts under his belt. Junior Collin Garrett is the lone returning starter at linebacker. He led the team with 96 tackles on the season, including 9.5 tackles for losses.
The 'Jacks will begin position meetings at 8:15 Monday morning, and will spend most of the day in meetings before hitting the field for their first official workout of camp at 7 p.m. The 'Jacks are slated for 24 workouts prior to beginning game-week preparations for the season opener against Weber State Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013.
