Defense Shines in Friday Workout

Aug. 8, 2008

NACOGDOCHES - What a difference a day makes? It was only 24 hours ago that the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack offense was flexing its muscle moving the ball up and down the field. The defense did a good job of imposing its will in Friday morning's workout.

Junior Cory Barlow, and his SFA defensive teammates forced two turnovers, batted away a Dalton Williams pass, and recorded some pretty big hits under the hot East Texas sun. Barlow, who has been impressive during the early part of preseason, forced a fumble, and put a big hit on freshman Romonté Hampton after a six-yard gain.

Barlow was joined in the big play category by sophomore defensive back Jeremy Claybon who picked off a Duane Brooks' pass and ran it back the length of the field for the touchdown. Longview freshman Shawn Hawkins made a nice athletic move from his defensive lineman spot to bat away a pass.

The highlights on the offensive side of the ball came from the running backs. Despite taking the hit from Barlow, Hampton walked off the field with more of the bragging rights. The speedy Hampton has shown an elusive ability to escape defenders through the first week of practice. On Friday he showed a tough side of his running ability. Hampton broke two tackles to carry the ball 50 yards into the end zone.

Even when things looked bad, Hampton was able to make something positive out of the play. Shortly after his touchdown scamper, Hampton bobbled a handoff, but never panicked. He scooped up the loose ball and recorded a five-yard gain on the play.

Friday's workout was the team's last practice before Saturday's two-a-day session. The 'Jacks will return to the practice field Saturday for an 8 a.m. workout. They will be back on the field to close out the day with a 7 p.m. practice.
