Johnson Named to CFPA National Performer of the Year List

Stephen F. Austin junior running Gus Johnson back has been named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) National Performer of the Year Watch List announced CFPA Executive Director Brad Smith Wednesday afternoon. Johnson is one of only 33 players nationally, and one of five Southland Conference players to be named to the list.
Johnson proved himself as one of the nation's top running backs during the 2012 season. A first-team All-Southland Conference selection, Johnson finished second in the league averaging nearly 100 yards per game. Johnson carried the ball 154 times for 954 yards and 14 touchdowns on the season. Johnson had a breakout game in the rain soaked contest against Central Arkansas. He finished the contest pounding out 215 yards and four touchdowns against nationally ranked Central Arkansas. He earned Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts. It was one of five 100-yard rushing games on the season, and one of two 200-yard games. Johnson finished the season tied for 12th in the nation with 14 rushing touchdowns. Johnson was the nation's sixth-leading rusher, in terms of sophomore running backs, during the 2012 season. He is among the nation's top 20 returning backs enter 2013. Johnson was named to the CFPA's Running Back Award Watch List in May. SFA is only six schools nationally to have an athlete named to the watch lists at quarterback, running back and receiver.
