Running Backs Look Strong in First Scrimmage
Aug 17, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin fans got their first look at the Lumberjacks, as the football team held a 105-play, offensive vs. defense scrimmage Saturday night at Homer Bryce Stadium.
"I was really pleased with the effort tonight, " SFA head football coach J.C. Harper said. "Their enthusiasm has been great all August camp. Obviously our running game looked strong tonight. Gus Johnson, Fred Ford and Jamarcus Walker all ran the ball well for us. It was a really good first scrimmage and I was pleased with both sides of the ball."
Senior quarterback Brady Attaway connected on eight of his 17 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown, but it was the defense who controlled the tone early on. Marvin Gray and Jabralon Allen totaled nine tackles in the scrimmage. Allen recorded five solo tackles and was apart of a tackle for a loss, while Gray finished with four solo tackles. Freshman Juvon Gales also impacted the offensive, recording two sack and three tackles.
Sophomore quarterback Joe Minden ran the second-team offense, completing seven of 12 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman Hunter Taylor completed two passes, including a 61-yard touchdown pass to Robert Sylvester.
D.J. Ward hauled in four receptions for 68 yards on the night, while Mike Brooks made the most of his one reception, recording a 70-yard touchdown pass.
After the `Jacks defense forced a stalemate of the aerial attack, the running backs turned the momentum around thanks to three longs runs from each of SFA's backs including a 66-yard run from Ford, a 59-yard touchdown score by Johnson and a 26-yard haul by Walker.
The `Jacks will return to practice Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
