'Jacks Impressive In Saturday Night Scrimmage

NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- Stephen F. Austin head football coach Mike Santiago said that he saw everything he wanted to see in Saturday night's final scrimmage of fall camp. The white team, consisting of first and second string team members, shut out the purple squad by a 31-0 margin.
"I was pleased with all facets of the scrimmage. We went through everything from the coin toss to sideline management and I was pleased with everything. It was a great dress rehearsal for the opener August 31. On the field, I saw good things both offensively and defensively. I was pleased with the execution on both sides of the ball and on special teams," said Santiago.
Tony Tompkins, a redshirt freshman from Port Arthur, returned the opening kickoff 99-yards for a touchdown to set the tone for the white team. The first team unit ended the scrimmage with 279 yards of total offense on only 29 snaps from scrimmage. Quarterbacks Michael Williams and Zeke Dixon combined to go 10-13 passing with one interception for 142 yards and two touchdowns. The unit rushed the ball 16 times for 137 yards and one touchdown.
Williams played only a handful of plays before leaving the scrimmage after taking a blow to the head. He was kept out of the remainder of the scrimmage as a precaution. He ended the night 2-2 passing for 25 yards and added two carries for 28 yards rushing. Zeke Dixon, a redshirt freshman from Westlake, Louisiana came on in relief and completed 8-11 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Anthony Dingle for a 17-yard score and hit Lawrence Hamilton for a 50-yard touchdown late in the scrimmage.
Thomas Williams led the way on the ground for the ?Jacks with five carries for 39 yards. Eric Chapman also added five carries for 36 yards and Tony Tompkins had two carries for 28 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown.
The white defense held the purple team in check allowing only 22 yards of total offense on 28 snaps. The purple team rushed the ball 16 times for -12 yards. Quarterbacks Royal Gill and Matt Williford combined to complete five of 13 passes for 34 yards.
The 'Jacks will have Monday off before beginning final preparations for the season opener Against Portland State on August 31.
