'Jacks Look to Even Up Record in Home Opener
Sept. 9, 2009
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team will look to put the disappointment of its season-opening heartbreaker at SMU behind them, as the 'Jacks return home to host Texas College. SFA (0-1) led the NCAA Division I FBS Mustangs by nine points in the fourth quarter before SMU rallied to score 17 unanswered for the win. The Lumberjacks will be looking to win consecutive homer openers after recording 56-19 decision against Langston last season. The Steers are 0-2 on the season after dropping decisions at Concordia College (Alabama) and Ouachita Baptist. Saturday's game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. SFA vs. THE STEERS: Saturday's contest will mark the first-ever meeting between SFA and Texas College on the football field. SFA in HOME OPENERS: The Lumberjacks are 25-18-2 (.644) in home openers dating back to the 1965 season. SFA has lost two of the last three, but has won three of the last five dating back to the 2004 season. The 'Jacks recorded a 56-19 victory over Langston in the 2008 season opener. ATTACKING THE FBS: The Lumberjacks almost put up more points at SMU than in their three previous games against NCAA Division I FBS opponents. SFA hung 23 points on the Mustangs, while scoring a total of 24 against Tulsa, Arizona and TCU. The 23 points also equals the total SFA scored to defeat Louisiana-Monroe during the 2003 season, and is the most post scored against FBS (I-A) school since scoring 34 to defeat Louisiana Tech in 2000. CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Junior quarterback Jeremy Moses threw two touchdown passes in the season-opening setback at SMU. The two touchdown passes give him 49 for his career. Moses needs only one more touchdown pass to become the third Lumberjack in program history to throw at least 50 touchdown passes (Todd Hammel - 65, Todd Whitten - 60) in their career. The remarkable thing about that stat is Moses has only played in 20 games. Hammel finished his career with 36 games played, while Whitten played in 38 games. Moses also threw for 391 yards at SMU which marks the 11th time in his career that he has thrown for at least 300 yards in a game. THE COACHES: J.C. Harper became the 18th head coach of the SFA Lumberjack football team in December, 2006. Harper spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator before taking over as head coach. He is 4-20 (.167) during his time at SFA. Texas College head coach Ricky Carson Sr. is 0-2 in his first season with the Steers.
