'Jacks On The Road For First Time in 2000
Sept. 15, 2000
The first road trip of the 2000 football season is here as the Lumberjacks travel to Ruston, Louisiana Saturday to take on Louisiana Tech. SFA enters the game at 2-0 while the Bulldogs are looking to even their record after starting the season 1-2.
The 'Jacks are coming off a penalty filled game with Texas A&M-Commerce last week at home, a game in which SFA prevailed 48-21, while Louisiana Tech is returning home for the second of only four home games this season.
Last week, the Bulldogs were defeated 67-7 by Penn State, and lost the week before that to Kansas State 54-10. Tech opened the season with a 63-10 thrashing of Mississippi Valley State, in Ruston, in late August.
For the second straight week the Lumberjacks will be without starting quarterback Wes Pate. Pate, a 6-4 240 pound junior from Arp, suffered a sprained ligament in his knee in the season opening win over Central Oklahoma and will not play Saturday. The Southland Football League's preseason All-SFL selection could begin practicing next week.
Travis Fallon, a senior from Corpus Christi, will once again take over for Pate. Last week, Fallon was almost flawless as he completed 12 of 19 passes for 111 yards and one touchdown and also rushed for 27 yards and another score.
The game marks the first of three straight road games for SFA. Following the trip to Ruston, SFA will close out the non-conference portion of their schedule as they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on Gateway Conference member Northern Iowa. SFA will have a week off the week of Spetember 30, then open Southland Football play October 7, in Lake Charles, as they take on McNeese State. The next home action for SFA will be October 14, as the Lumberjacks return home to host Sam Houston in the annual homecoming game at the university.
