Golf Finishes Fifth At Rice
Feb. 10, 2004
HOUSTON, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team climbed four spots in Tuesday's final round of the Rice Intercollegiate in miserable conditions at Blackhorse North Golf Club to finish in fifth place in the team's first tournament of the spring. Trevor Sauntry, a junior from Missouri City, shot a final round 71 to move from a tie for 39th place to a 12th place finish. Sauntry's round was the low round for the day. He shot 81-72-71 to lead the 'Jacks. Mansfield sophomore Brian Grossman stumbled Tuesday to shoot 80 and slip into a tie for 17th. Grossman shot rounds of 71-75 Monday to go along with Tuesday's final round 80. The 'Jacks entered the day in a tie for eighth place with San Diego and moved past four teams to finish fifth in the event. SFA shot a final round 308, the third best round of the day. UT-San Antonio won the event, five strokes ahead of Notre Dame and Denver, which tied for second place. North Texas finished fourth. Texas State, which started the day in fourth place fell all the way back to seventh. SFA returns to action next week at the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Southern Mississippi, in Hattiesburg, Miss.
