March 27, 2012
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team clearly saved its best for last at the UALR/First Tee Intercollegiate Tuesday afternoon in Little Rock, Ark. SFA carded the second-lowest round of the day, firing a 301 to climb six places on the final day of the tournament to finish tied for fifth overall, 306-303-301 - 910, on the 7,326-yard, par-72 Bear Den Course at Chenal Country Club. "Following the second round yesterday, it was hard to have much confidence," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "But I'm proud of how we battled back today. We're not happy with where we are at, but today's finish gives us some confidence going forward." Junior Mitchell McLeroy flirted with the individual title carding a one-over par 217, but finished second overall just a stroke behind Missouri State's Will Hogan. McLeroy took a four-stroke lead over Hogan following the opening round of play, but Hogan responded with a six-under 68 in Monday's second round to regain the lead. After an opening-round 78, freshman Blake Pugh recorded consecutive rounds of 73. He finished the tournament tied for 12th overall with a 224. Senior Stetson McMillan was never able to recover from his worst start of the season. McMillan posted a 236 to finished tied for 61st overall. While McMillan was unhappy with the final outcome, senior Michael Smith had to feel a bit relieved that he rallied to finished tied for 61st. After struggling in opening round, Smith battled back in the second round with a six-over par in the second, and a four-over 76 in the third. Smith closed out the tournament with a 236. Austin DeWitt closed out the SFA scoring with a 252, unable to improve from his opening round score. The Lumberjacks return to action Sunday, April 1st, when they travel to Victoria, Texas to compete in the Jim West Intercollegiate.
